Paul Emile Charles BorduasBorn: Nov 1 1905 - Quebec, Canada
Paul Émile Charles Borduas was a revolutionary Canadian painter and the primary leader of the avant-garde Automatiste movement in Quebec. He began his career as a church decorator before becoming an influential teacher and artist who sought to liberate the subconscious through spontaneous creation. He is most famously known as the lead author of the Refus Global (1948), a provocative manifesto that challenged the traditional authority of the Catholic Church and laid the intellectual groundwork for Quebec's Quiet Revolution.
